Dental Exam

A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by our staff for every new patient. At your initial dental visit, your initial oral examination will include; diagnostic x-rays, oral cancer screening/exam, visual examination of teeth and the gums, charting, periodontal probing, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations.

Full mouth x-ray (digital radiographs): X-ray of anterior (front) and posterior (back) teeth for proper diagnosis of decay.
Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lymph nodes, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer. Learn more about ViziLite on our website or ask our Team.
Charting: Recording existing status of your teeth, fillings, crowns, etc.
Gum disease evaluation/Periodontal probing: Check and measure the gums and the supporting bone for any signs of infection.
Examination of tooth decay: All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay with special dental instruments.
Examination of existing restorations: Check current fillings, crowns, etc. for decay, fracture/cracks, leakage, and a thorough evaluation.
Diagnosis/Treatment Plan: Treatment options are present based on the patient’s needs in order to maintain a pain-free, disease-free, healthy mouth.

Professional Dental Cleaning

Professional dental cleanings (Basic Adult Prophy) are usually performed by Registered Dental Hygienists. You should have a standard cleaning at least twice a year. Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam, possible x-rays, and the following:

Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.

Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease!

Teeth polishing: Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.

Home Care Instructions

Periodontal Cleaning

If it has been over a year since your last cleaning, possible treatment can include Periodontal Scaling (deeper) and Root Planning (requires anesthetic) at which time you will be informed about the severity of your infection.
